Our Smiles Change Over Time, But Orthodontics has Changed, Too

April 19, 2023

Thanks to advances in medicine and health care, we’re living longer, more active lives. Many of us are eating healthier and incorporating exercise into our routines to contribute to our mental and physical well-being. And while that’s all very good news, living longer requires that we make continual adjustments as our bodies age.

One example of this is our smile, as our teeth go through a series of changes in the way they look, feel and function after years of normal use. Nowadays, our friendly orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. is seeing more and more adult patients who want to take advantage of our state-of-the-art treatments to ensure that their smiles last well into their golden years. In fact, older adults are seeking our services at historic levels; there’s no reason why our teeth shouldn’t look and feel as youthful as we do!

Here are a few of the most common examples of what we see among our older patients:

Malocclusions, which are disorders of the bite that occur when the jaws are out of alignment. They may result in teeth grinding, headaches, and clicking and popping of the jaw joints.
Shifting of the teeth after orthodontic treatment as we age, which requires a retainer to reposition the teeth.
Space between the two front teeth, known as a diastema, brought on by crowding, inflammation of the gums, or simply caused by the tongue pressing against the teeth over time.
Crowding of the bottom teeth, which occurs when our jaw bone loses density, from a facial injury, or because of several other factors.

Our orthodontic practice at Orthodontics, Inc. has changed with the times to accommodate these and other conditions that appear among our older patients. There’s no reason that your smile shouldn’t be healthy and beautiful, no matter your age. Please contact our office today to learn more about our treatments for adults.
