The tradition that only youngsters get braces faded years ago. Adults who didn’t have braces as kids or who did but whose teeth have since shifted are flocking to orthodontists. They want to enjoy all of the many cosmetic and oral health benefits of a beautiful smile.
In emphasizing the importance of dental care, we at the office of Orthodontics, Inc. are dedicated to helping patients of all ages enjoy the benefits of a healthy and beautiful smile. We provide a comprehensive program of preventive care designed to protect your teeth and reduce the risk of dental disease.
If your mind needs to be refreshed on the topic of braces or you’re a newbie to the subject, here’s some helpful information that can get you on your way to your first visit. There are more treatment options now than in yesteryear. An orthodontist will tell you about those choices and which would benefit you most.
If you’re a candidate for brackets-and-wires braces that are less conspicuous, you can get “clear braces,” whose brackets are tooth-colored, ceramic and are affixed to the front of each tooth. This is as opposed to the traditional “railroad tracks,” whose stainless steel or ceramic brackets encompass each tooth. Not all orthodontic problems can be corrected with ceramic braces. Some adults have a combination of ceramic and metal braces.
A wire is strung through each bracket’s ligature—usually a small, elastic o-shaped ring around each bracket. Patients feeling bold can choose rings in a variety of colors that can be different at each appointment. If your orthodontist mentions brackets with doors, he (or she) is talking about self-ligating braces. Instead of using elastic ties to hold the wires, they use little metal doors. A clip built into the bracket holds the wires to the bracket.
There’s also the Invisalign® method. It uses clear, plastic aligners that render them almost invisible. Every two to three weeks, you’ll receive new aligners to accommodate the subtle movements of your teeth as treatment progresses. Best of all, you’ll be able to briefly remove the aligners to thoroughly clean your teeth and enjoy types of food that would be unadvisable while wearing braces with wires and brackets.
