Patients of all ages who visit our orthodontist at Ortho Inc. are asking us about whether clear aligners are the right choice for their treatment. Since these options were introduced some two decades ago, they’ve become increasingly popular because they’re comfortable, convenient and almost no one knows you’re wearing them!
However, these removable plastic trays are not the solution for everyone. We’d like to outline some of the factors that determine whether you are a candidate for this form of treatment.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, clear aligners may be the right answer if:
- You have mild to moderate crowding or spacing issues
- You have an underbite, overbite, crossbite, or rotated teeth
- You have previously had braces and your teeth have shifted
Clear aligners may not be the best option for you if:
- You have severe spacing or crowding issues
- You have a complex bite problem
- You have missing teeth
- You have large crowns or fillings
- You have gum disease
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
Other considerations in terms of whether clear aligners are suitable include:
- Because their jawbones are still developing, braces may be the better option for children. Clear aligners are best suited for teenagers and adults.
- Candidates for clear aligners need to have attained good oral health, meaning their teeth and gums are healthy and they have no cavities or other dental conditions.
A consultation with our orthodontist will help determine which treatment is best for you. Keep in mind that we have other options besides traditional metal braces and clear aligners. If discretion is a concern, ask us about tooth-colored ceramic braces or lingual braces that are tucked away behind your teeth.
The most important option is where you choose to go for treatment. Our practice at Ortho Inc. has become the gold standard for achieving a beautiful smile that delivers lasting comfort and health. Please contact us today to arrange a consultation!
