We’ve all heard the phrase “too much of a good thing.” Someone who loves chocolate can get sick from overindulging in it. The same holds for brushing your teeth. People who wear braces must indeed take extra time and care with their daily oral hygiene to ensure that the tooth surfaces next to their appliances are clean, but there’s no need to go overboard. In fact, brushing incorrectly, too often or too vigorously can put your teeth in jeopardy for gum recession, tooth sensitivity and oral abrasion.
At the office of Ortho Inc., our skilled professionals are experts in orthodontic techniques, offering the latest in treatments and patient education to create the healthiest, most attractive smile for each of our patients. All of our highly knowledgeable dental specialists are friendly, enthusiastic and cheerful.
Constant fervent and incorrect brushing can make the softer cementum of the root exposed and vulnerable and, in turn, notched and easily worn away. (Cementum is the calcified material that covers the outside of the tooth root; it is the attachment site for the periodontal ligaments that hold the tooth in the socket.) These conditions lead to sensitivity and pain when your teeth come into contact with foods and beverages that are cold, hot, sweet or sour. The risk of decay is also heightened.
Abrasion involves the wearing away of tooth enamel and, as time passes, the dentin and cementum. Abrasion presents itself as worn, shiny and brown or yellow areas on the tooth or at the gum line. So do the formations of wedges or V-shaped serrations, known as notching, along the gum line. Abrasion and gum recession can lead to cavities and the loss of teeth.
Diminished gums might never return to the areas that they originally covered. If you aren’t sure if you’re thoroughly cleaning your teeth or, if you’re worried that you’re overdoing it, an orthodontist will give you detailed advice about how often to brush your teeth and the best method to use.
